PROJECT TITLE: Smart Damping Technology

PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
Smart Damping Technology Solution for Intelligent Civil Engineering Structures Smart damping devices incorporate innovative ˇ§smart materialsˇ¨ such as electro-rheological (ER) fluids and magneto-rheological (MR) fluids so that the devices offer adjustable and controllable damping for structural vibration control. As a result, smart damping technology builds an intelligent engineering structure and approaches an optimal damping of the structure dynamically to achieve a maximum mitigation of vibration. The PolyU has developed a significant know-how in this technology and is able to design systems to suit the requirements of different projects. The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, in collaboration with Central South University(China), has successfully implemented this technology on Dongting Lake Bridge to mitigate wind-rain-induced cable vibration. The smart dampers reduced cable vibration by 85% and completely suppressed wind-rain-induced vibration originally occurring on the bridge.
