PROJECT TITLE: A Novel Biomarker for Cancer Therapeutics Response
PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Cancer is a major “killer” disease in mankind. Until now, there is still no effective way to achieve complete cure of the disease. In cancer therapy, one of the major pitfalls is due to the development of resistance to the treatment. Although there are many ways the cancer cells can be resistant to treatment, the existing knowledge still cannot fully explain the failure of treatment. A novel gene was confirmed to induce drug resistance in several cell systems and suppression of the gene is proved to effectively increase the therapeutic outcome. In addition, the gene is found to have altered expression in several types of human cancer. Such alteration may suggest the possible use of the gene as biomarker for cancer.
