PROJECT TITLE: Natural cholinesterase inhibitors to treat cognitive impairment
PROJECT DESCRIPTION: This invention provides a new usage of a Chinese medicinal material and three pure compounds on treating cognitive impairments. These disorders include Alzheimer's disease, insomnia, vascular dementia, memory loss, disorders of attention and other sleeping disorders. These compounds, found in the root of a Chinese medicinal material, are shown to selectively inhibit acetylcholinesterase (AChE) activity. These compounds are non-toxic towards selected cell lines and have higher specificity on AChE as compared to butrylcholinesterase.
